Well after months of training, injuries & struggle the day came & went pretty quickly!
It was a really good day a bit of rain at the start before we all set off but the weather was favourable, although I think it topped around 18-19 deg.
Ran the first half comfortably but was boxed in with people loads of the time & rarely had chance to run a free speed without weaving & dodging people & I was aware that I had to save some energy for the end!
Second half pace dropped off slightly & miles 21-25 were really tough physically, I wanted to maintain pace but I just couldn't manage it so I settled for trying to achieve just under 10min miles & that was maintainable until the end, hopefully though if I do it again I will train harder so that I can run an even or negative second half split & if that happened I could get a 3:40 finish without too much trauma!
I have exceeded my fundraising target so it has been worth all of the effort from me & those around me to promote the marathon & fundraise so thank you to all of those poeple!
I will be entering the ballot on the 4th of May for next year so hope to run it in 2011!

Final Update!
Well this time in one week it should be all over, well I hope so anyway! Been a reasonable last 2 weeks, done a reduced training schedule including a 12 mile run last weekend lots of gym sessions inbetween, some smaller runs & a 7 mile run in my race kit today with & a 1:45 ride out on my bike too!
A couple of visits to the gym planned for this week but lots of rest hopefully before the big day, the amount of rest will depend on the amount of volcano ash in the air by the looks of it!!
In general my training has gone OK, I have had though my fair share of injuries the highlights include major IT band in the left knee, slight IT band problems on the right knee, both Achilles strained & lots of minor aches & pains around the ankle & lower leg inc some minor shin splints! Hopefully now though I will be fit for the day! Bring it on
Fundraising has gone OK & I really hope to hit my target on or just after the race itself, www.justgiving.com/ian-kelly
Lets hope it is dry next sunday but not as warm as it was today!

progress..........
Well it's been a couple of weeks since my last update as I have been really busy with training & work.
Thankfully training has been going really well, did some running in Dortmund, some good 1 hour up tempo runs during the week & have been down the gym quite a few times in the last few weeks as a bonus. I have now completed my last long distance training run & managed just under 24 miles in 3:35 on bank hol monday. Many thanks to Emma who dragged herself out of bed v early on her Bank Holiday to come with me for my last long run on her bike & well done for powering up those hills!
The last long run was good & it gives me confidence to go into my taper period knowing that I comfortably ran just under 24 miles in training! Hopefully on the day with a bit of R&R I will be able to run slightly faster than I have in training but we will see, lets hope so!
I am really really glad to now finally enter the taper phase of training & I am going to back off a little to give my body chance to recover & repair so I will be raring to go on the day, 2 weeks this Sunday OMG!!
Still planning a 13 mile run this weekend, a few gym sessions & I will get out on the mountain bike but it will be a relaxed schedule!
Still looking for extra donations to hit the target, please donate @ www.justgiving.com/ian-kelly

Training Update
Another week down already! 4 weeks this Sunday to the marathon can't believe how quick it has come around!
This week has been quite a good week for training despite having a slight back ache, although strangely running doesn't aggravate it further, thankfully!
After a day off to recover from Silverstone last weekend I got back on it on Tuesday & trained on Tue, Thu & Friday completing a mixture of running, interval cardio training, some more speed work & strength training so good progress during the week.
Yesterday completed my longest training run so far & managed 22miles in 3:15 on my weekly long run. Felt good all the way & could have probably done another 4.2 miles if I had too!! Feel a bit sore today though but hopefully back to training tomorrow with a recovery run......
Thanks to Em who came with me yesterday on the bike for support but I think the 22miles are having an affect on her today!!!!
Still need sponsorship for The Blue Cross www.justgiving.com/ian-kelly

more progress!
Been an interesting week! Last week was a little slow as the 18mile run last sunday must have taken it out of me as I felt mega tired all of the week!! Went to the gym a couple of times & managed a 10km run midweek so not all bad but still needed to back off to recover a little.
Yesterday was the Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon & it was a good day, 10,000 people + & I ran a 1:39 not too bad considering the wind & how tired I have felt lately, some parts of the race the wind was really slowing people down though, but still a really good experience! Next competitive half I will be looking for 1:35 conditions permitting........
Feeling a little stiff this morning so this week will be a little bit recovery & rest, some running & hopefully all being well I will be looking at a 18-20 mile LSR on Sunday.
6 Weeks to go to London, its really not long now!

Training!!!!!!
Well lots of training since last update! No real problems with the IT band or knees in general, I do seem to be in a injury free period so I had better make the most of it & get some training done!!!!! Still have lots of general aches & pains though...............
Last wkend went to Cornwall & ran Camborne-Mousehole 16miles + & thanks to Dad who came along for the journey on the bike!!
During the week managed a few training sessions a shorter 10km run on friday & yesterday (Sunday 7th) put in a nice comfortable 18mile run in 2:45 so its all good at the mo!
Got the Silverstone half this weekend & hopefully a couple of long training runs for the next few weeks with some speed work in between, not long to the big day!

more progress!
An early update this week due to being away for the weekend! Last Sunday went out for a long run & got a bit carried away & ran 16miles some road some cross country & I really enjoyed it!! Took 2 hours 10 mins but no pain from the IT band, a little pain from both knee joints at the end but I guess that is to be expected from a 16 miler!
A couple of rest days this week but a short recovery 5km run yesterday with some strength training at the gym & back to the gym today for some cross training! So all going ok so far........
Will be easing back into my original training programme now with a couple of gym sessions & short runs during the week to do interval & speed work & long runs at the wkend flying permitting! Hopefully I will get at least one 16mile a 18 mile & a 20mile run done in March before the final taper towards the race, as its my priority to be fit on race day.
Still need as many contributions as possible www.justgiving.com/ian-kelly

Update!
Another week gone & another week closer to the marathon! Only 2 months to the run & so much training still to do! I have been doing lots of training but no real long distance runs since the injury.
This week has been more positive again though & I have run around 29km in total, I have also completed 2 gym sessions & a further 20km on the spin bike using this instead of one of my mid week runs to take the pressure of the knee. So more than last week & a reasonable amount of training done, I do need to start pushing the weekly long runs as the longest since injury has been only 12km in one go without the knee niggling!
Off running today once my standby duty is finished & the rain has eased a little from the heavy downpour at present so hopefully a good start to this week & with 13 days coming up free from work soon I will be able to concentrate on training & gym work so will hopefully make good progress & will be prepared for my injury free fitness test at Silverstone in a few weeks.

Running Again!!
Another week gone & only 10 weeks tomorrow until the big day! Finally been able to get back out running again, still a little tender in the knee but I have been properly training again, finally.
Managed around 23km of running, a bit of swimming, cross training and some gym work in the last week so not bad all in all considering I am post injury. Hopefully I can slightly increase the mileage this week but I will be continuing to cross train to ease the impact on the knee & IT band.
Hopefully I can start to work on my longer distance runs soon & I do have a good fitness test at the Silverstone GP track over a half marathon distance soon so that will tell how much progress I have made towards the marathon, I think with the lack of training I will have to revise my target time for the full distance though! I would just like to be fit on the day & take it as it comes....

Progress!!
Finally some progress with the IT band! I am getting better & can manage the injury now but it due to the nature of this tendon it has taken ages to heal...............
Finally managed to do a pain free run this week! Plus gym sessions every other day with loads cross training & 'spin' biking until I can up the mileage carefully & get some marathon training done on the road!
2 months 18days to the big day & my focus is to be fit for the day & run as best as I can due to the lack of training over the last month my target time will be revised depending on how much training I can get back in!
Got a good fitness test in a month at the Addidas Half Marathon at Silverstone so if I can achieve a comfortable half I can up the mileage between that & london..
Fundraising is going quite well but still need any possible donations to exceed my target www.justgiving.com/ian-kelly

Ongoing........
Right this week started with a 5km run a few gym sessions & a 10km run with no real improvement in the knee. I have had this week an x-ray, physio & acupuncture! My knee ligament pain is being caused from an inflamed Iliotibial band apparently, basically its an over training issue, but because it is a tendon it will take longer to heal?
So I have decided that the next week will be a treatment week not a training week and I will be taking some serious rest! I am going to nurse myself better & maybe go swimming to try & keep some aerobic fitness going.
I am certainly hope that my IT band will get better soon & I can slowly build up the running training & get back into my programme, at least now I have a correct diagnosis & will have more physio over the next few weeks to get me back out training again!
Only 3 months to the day virtually for the marathon & my sub 4 hour target time is slipping by the day.............
Fundraising is moving forward slowly but I still need your help to hit my target so visit http://www.justgiving.com/Ian-kelly to donate so we can produce a usable contribution to the charity

arrrggghhh!!!!!!!!!!
Knee ligament injury is still the main focus, however recently I have had physio, visit to the GP, personal training session and lots of RICE!!!
I haven't done much road running due to the knee however with the snow & ice I probably wouldn't have been able to do much anyway as it would have been too much of an injury risk!
I have though got back into the gym done loads & loads of strength training work since the last update & I have done a few 5km runs on the treadmill. I have also been working the knee & leg muscles to help stabilise the knee & it seems to be getting a little better!
More cross training, swimming & strength training for me for the next week, hopefully put in a couple of taster 10km road runs mid week to see how the knee is getting on & then fingers crossed I will be able to pick up my training plan & get back to my long steady runs once a week so I can hit the longer distances in a month or so!
Only 100 days to get race fit & raise the required fundraising!!!! OMG this is going to be the quickest 100 days in history!

Update
Well its been a few weeks since the last update! Xmas & New Year passed with not much training being done a bit of a shame really! I was very willing but the weather, snow, ice & my knee ligament was not having any of it!
Did go for a decent run out on Xmas day morning much to my Mothers surprise but still some training miles in, but been on rest & RICE ever since with a strained knee ligament.
Finally back from working in Germany, got some professional advice & physiotherapy who have advised me to lay off the tarmac & long distance running & have told me to stick to the gym to rebuild the strength in my knee so marathon training is on hold until the knee improves, bugger!
Hopefully with some gym training I can get the marathon training back on track in a few weeks but its only 3 months 20 days till the big day so watch this space!!
Fundraising is moving forward but I still need your help to hit my target so visit http://www.justgiving.com/Ian-kelly to donate so we can produce a usable contribution to the charity
